Albert J. Kreutner was born in Shellsburg, Iowa and began his career as a farmer. In January 1948, he decided to enter the farm implement business and purchased the business establishing Kreutner Implement Co. in Mount Pleasant. The original location was east of the town square on East Monroe Street. In 1953, they opened a new location on the north edge of Mt. Pleasant on Highway 218. The new location was a 40' x 80' concrete block building consisting of 40' x 40' showroom and parts department along with a 40' x 40' shop. Al operated the business along with his wife Pauline who worked in the parts department. The Kreutner's lived in their home just south of the dealership. The dealership received Oliver's prestigious President's Honor Council Award for 1964-1967 and 1969. In November 1969, Al officially incorporated the business as Kreutner Implement Company and added George Porter of Mount Pleasant as a vice president along with his wife Pauline as secretary-treasurer of the corporation.
In addition to Oliver, they offered grain handling equipment, Stan-Hoist, and Gehl equipment lines. Al and Pauline continued the business until 1974. The business was officially sold to Gary Swart on November 1, 1974. White Farm Equipment named Swart Implement the new dealer for the White, Oliver, and Minneapolis-Moline lines. At this time, Kreutner's moved to Cedar Rapids. Al worked as a realtor for Byers & Happel, which was owned by Bill Happel who had previously worked for this father's Oliver dealership in Cedar Rapids. Al passed away at age 65 in 1980. |
